The Understanding of Music Seminar:
Every Beginner Understands, Reads and Plays Music by the End of the Weekend and
Professional Musicians Reach New Creative Heights!
Let me make repeat that: EVERY attendee reads and plays music, hands together
on the keyboard, by the end of the seminar. Lifelong musicians fill in
gaps in their understanding, and reach new creative heights. Documented
Fact.
No matter where you live, no matter what your age or personal level of
musical ability is, no matter what instrument you play, THIS SEMINAR
IS WHAT YOU NEED RIGHT NOW! Read below the success stories from
viola/violin players, coronet players, guitar players,
keyboardists and singers.
If you want to move fast and find out what people at your level of
musical ability have to say about this three-day seminar, you can click on
Music Beginners,
Self-Taught Musicians, or Music School
Students & Teachers. Further down I give you TWO money-back guarantees, and
FOUR options to register for the
2008 Seminar.
My name is Mike Tyler and I'm the host of the seminar. The guy in the picture is my friend Duncan Lorien, world-renowned music
instructor. Duncan travels around the world delivering his Understanding
of Music™ Seminar, to far-flung places including
Austria, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
I've had the pleasure of hosting Duncan four times in the
past three years.
This year, we are bringing the Understanding of Music
Seminar to Buffalo, New York!
Why Buffalo? Teri and I are joining up with friends in Buffalo to work
on some projects there, including opening a school licensed by Applied
Scholastics International. I'm already licensed by Applied Scholastics
International to deliver a phonics-based reading program, study skills courses
and other tutoring. Teri has a deep passion for educating children, so
this is a great project for the two of us. I'll keep expanding this
website to include ALL the projects we're involved in. For now, let's talk
about music.
Duncan's
passion is teaching music, and it is his purpose in life to get the
basics of music into the hands of as many people he can reach. He has come
to Battle Creek, Michigan, four times in the past three years, and his latest
seminar (July, 2007), delivered at the gorgeous Masonic Center in downtown Battle Creek, was
our most impressive one yet. I say "our" because as the host of the
seminar, I get a real kick out of watching people from every level of
musical background take in thousands of years of the history of music as Duncan delivers it.
Guys like me who knew NOTHING about music before the seminar, sit and learn
thousands of years of music history, and go on to memorize 60 musical scales in
60 seconds, and ALL the major and minor chords in another 60 seconds
– wait a minute
– that's stretching the truth a bit. The chords only take
about 30 seconds. And us beginners sort of take it in stride that this is the way it
SHOULD be for everyone.
The attendees who had studied music in music school generally CRY at least
once during the seminar (and almost always at the end, when they walk up to Duncan
expressing their thanks), as Duncan explains the simplicity behind something
taught in a way-too-complex fashion in music school. The self-taught
musicians see a whole new world of creativity open up before them.
Music Beginners
Don't worry if you don't know what scales are yet, or what major chords and
minor chords are; these are just different ways of grouping notes together, and
you learn them ALL at the seminar. Here's what some music
beginners had to say:
Tammy Terrero, mother of two
Previous music experience: none
"I have to say this has been an awesome experience for me. It was only by
chance that I even came here. You can call it luck or fate, I don't
know, but my mind has been opened to this world of music, this world of
opportunities and dreams that I thought were out of reach and too "complex".
I'm going to practice and I will see Duncan again. I feel like this experience
is at the right time in my life and is going to give me the direction and
goals I've been longing for since I can remember."
Randy Meyers, owner of Meyers Automotive, Sturgis, Michigan
Previous music experience: none
“This was a fantastic weekend for
me. It was a new way to look at life. The reading & playing music
was a bonus.”
Nicolas D. Priddy, chemist
Previous music experience: none
“I knew nothing about music before
participating in this seminar. Using the technique of teaching Duncan
used, I can now read and play music. In this process I was able to clear
up many misunderstandings of music and now I feel I can participate in music
and not just be a bystander.”
John Ryder, computer technician
Previous music experience: public school courses in piano
"This seminar gave me an understanding of music in 2
˝ days that I thought I would never gain
in an entire lifetime. The subject of music is de-mystified and
simplified. You can understand music. Do the
seminar. You will be amazed no matter your level of experience."
Teri Tyler, computer programmer
Previous music experience: 1 year of piano lessons as a child
Teri's success from her first Understanding of Music Seminar:
“It was more than I expected.
It makes understanding music very simple. I know now that anyone
could learn to play and read music with what I learned in this seminar.
I’m going to get my brothers and sisters, my mother, daughter and grandson all
to come.”
(This is my wife Teri, by the way!!!) Here is her success from her
second seminar:
"This was my second time doing the seminar and I got so much more
understanding of it this time than the first. I was able to really
understand how to play the guitar which I hadn't fully understood the first
time (I was mostly interested in piano). It was much more enjoyable
this time. It's truly amazing that I really learned to read and play
music over the weekend."
Count Laws, federal employee
Previous music experience: singing
(Count is a local celebrity through his
church choir and public performances)
First seminar: “Great seminar – I know I’ll be
able to play piano after I practice. I learned about more than music – I
will return for the next seminar."
Second: "Thank you very much! A
complex subject made simple. Thanks again!”
Third:
"Gets better and clearer each time. I enjoy the
seminar and look forward to coming each year. More should attend.
It's about more than music. I have learned a lot and will learn more."
Maria Guy, secretary
Previous music experience: none
“I had a blast. This was the
best seminar that I have ever attended. I will make sure that I bring at
least three people to the next one. I want my grandkids to be part of
this seminar; my kids, my friends, everyone that I have ever known.”
(by the way, scroll way back up to
the top and you can re-read Maria's daughter Tammy's success story. It's
the first one up top)
Jerry West, carpenter
Previous music experience: almost none
“Wow! My only experience with
creating music is when my babysitter tried to teach me guitar chords at 8.
Since then I had decided I preferred to listen to music. Now I’m
completely ready to start creating awesome music.”
Dena Anderson, business owner
Previous music experience:
“I took lessons for a few years as
a child. However, it was all rote for me and never about communication
or creativity. I’m really looking forward to having fun with all the new
understandings and tools I’ve gained this weekend. I can also think of
many others to share this seminar with, starting with my son-in-law.”
“Since I didn’t know anything – now
I know everything. I’m wondering how I’ll be using this seminar in all
my walks of life – reading, what I’m willing to risk in all my relationships,
in the food I eat, in the exercise I do, in the kind of teacher I am, in my
retirement plans. I’m still having my mouth fall open. Love,”
Patricia Dorow, school teacher
Tia West,
Purification Program In-Charge
Previous music experience: two months
“This seminar was really really
awesome because I was learning bass guitar for about 2 months; I had learned
to play 3 songs not very well, and the E minor pentatonic scale (ha ha! I know
what that is now!) and now I’m a Miss-Know-It-All because I can go back to my
friends who had previously been trying to show me the G chord and I can
practice for 3 weeks while I’m still on vacation and by the time I get back to
LA I’ll show them all the chords plus a fancy Ionian scale.”
Iris Robinson Rodgers, training administrator
Previous music experience: none outside of elementary school
"I thoroughly enjoyed the Understanding of Music Seminar. It was an
excellent mixture of music theory, music history and practical hands-on
application. I had not planned to attend, but rather send my son as an
alternate to attending a 2-week summer music camp. I was so glad I
decided to attend with him. First of all, I never thought I could learn
to read and play music – especially in just one
weekend – and I did. Duncan also provides life lessons that are
transferable to other areas of your life. It was a great confidence
booster. I plan to do it again. Thanks, see you next time (on
another continent!!)." (Iris will be turning Duncan's world travels to
her benefit!)
Dallas Dean Melton, retired
Previous music experience: none
"I am very happy to have come to your seminar.
I have never been to one. I hope to return at your next one, and I have
really enjoyed this one. P.S. May the dreams closest to your heart come
true and may the almighty God bless you and all of your family."
Dallas proves that age is no barrier! The day after the seminar, Dallas' daughter reported that Dallas was doing
his finger exercises as she drove him to the Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field
where he has been a regular usher for several years. Dallas' daughter
Della had done the Understanding of Music Seminar twice in Chicago, and couldn't
wait until the next time Duncan would be back, to get her dad to experience the
same miraculous gains that she had gotten in Chicago. Della had studied
music in college -- she's a jazz vocalist -- you can read her success a little
further down.

Self-Taught Musicians
These are my heroes. The guys and gals who just pick up an instrument
and through sheer determination, teach themselves to play. I have friends
who can pick up an acoustic guitar and a pair of bongo drums (remember those
things?) and entertain a crowd of people late into the night singing songs from
every genre. These guys learned music from the inside out.
What could a self-taught musician get out of a seminar devoted
to uncovering every single complexity in the subject, and turning it into a
simplicity? Let me tell you about Jose De Cecco.
Just a month before the 2007 seminar, my wife Teri and I were celebrating our
five-year wedding anniversary, and I hadn't checked my emails for a couple of days.
Sunday morning I logged on from home, and read a whole series of emails
from Jose. He's been playing guitar for 12 years, and was
looking to take it to the next level. He found us on the internet,
couldn't get hold of me by email, so he found Duncan, got my phone number and
left me several messages.
I called him first thing – woke him up. Turns out he had been working
on a graphic design project until 5 am, but he talked with me for half an hour
anyway. Later that day he had paid for the music seminar and booked his
flight. Although he lives in South Carolina, he had a series of flights
planned for July, taking him to New York, then Texas. In order to get to
the Battle Creek seminar, he changed his flight plans and flew into Detroit
from Texas. I picked him up from the Detroit airport at the same time I
picked up Duncan, who flew in from Boston. Here's what
Jose and a few other self-taught musicians had to say about the Understanding of
Music Seminar:
Jose De Cecco, graphic designer
"Prior to the seminar, I started trying to learn the basics of music
theory on my own. I've learned bits and pieces over 12 years without
ever being able to put the pieces together, so I started trying to figure out
how western music works based on patterns; but it still seemed to elude me.
Duncan has it all figured out and it just makes sense. Thanks so much
for your dedication to the subject."
Peter
Jungen, engineer/designer
“This is something totally beyond
what I expected or even thought possible. I shed a great deal of baggage
of unnecessary information and rekindled my interest in playing music.
Thanks Duncan for creating this seminar and Mike for bringing it to Battle
Creek.”
Brenda
Johnson, mother
“Loved it! Loved it! I
wanted to come so I could learn more chords, etc., so my songwriting would
have more variety, etc. I GOT SO MUCH
MORE THAN THAT!!! You are no less than brilliant!
There were times I wanted to CRY at the thought of ‘why didn’t I know
this before? What would my life had been like had I had this knowledge
before?’ But I will not cry – I will be like the blue-haired 67 year-old
ladies (from Australia, who joined a punk rock band after Duncan’s seminar)
who are out there making up for lost time! Decision: I will attend
Duncan’s songwriting seminar and write CD’s worth of songs! I will
practice, practice, practice! I will give music the place in my life
that I always wanted to give it. NO EXCUSES!”
Cass
Dufrin, musician, art instructor
“Dear Duncan, I have been a working
musician for 29 years and have learned more in this weekend than I have in 40
years. Thank you for all this wonderful information. I’m ready to
start.”
Dan
Naimowicz, professional keyboardist
“Thanks Duncan. Your life’s
work is truly appreciated. The scope of the work is huge! I have
been playing for 45 years and for the 1st time have an organized
way to enhance my playing. The wins are enormous and I thank you for
your care – thank you Sir!”
Ed Sachs,
software salesman
“To cut to the chase, I now have
the musical foundation I have been searching for; more years than I care to
mention. With it, I know I can now take my musical desires to an exact
level and accomplish getting my personal music out. I heartily recommend
this to all people who want to finally understand music, despite years
of playing.”
Brian
Zanetti, mason, guitarist of 18 years
“I had a real good time . . . you
made it so simple to understand. I look forward to the Songwriting
Seminar . . . keep up the good work.”
Sarah Keen, legal
assistant, rock/blues singer
“I have been singing since I was a
preschooler. As I grew older and began to perform as a singer in front
of people I would continue to hear, ‘You have a beautiful voice, but you need
some backup . . . you should learn to play an instrument.’ I always
wanted to learn an instrument but never felt I had the time . . . I would take
lessons, but did not grasp in the concept. In the end, I cheated . . . I
joined a band, married the lead guitarist and forever have accompaniment.
But – I still WANTED to learn, knew I could, but put it off. I AM SO
GLAD – EMPHATICALLY GLAD – that I took this course. First of all – I
have grasped the concept behind the instruments. It is not going into
the unknown now. I know I will be playing an instrument, rather than
‘think I could.’ My husband and I have daydreamed of becoming
professionals – I know it can happen now. I am so overwhelmed – I am
shaking and I will probably cry like a baby when I leave. THANK YOU!”
Paul Keen, mason and guitarist
Previous music experience: 14 years
“I have been playing guitar for
about fourteen years and in a band for about seven years. This seminar
has already opened many windows for me that I never thought possible. I
am completely excited about my future in music.”

Music School
Students & Teachers
These are the most fun of all the attendees to watch. As Duncan strips
away the complexities that have been laid into the subject of music over
thousands of years, and replaces them with simplicities, the biggest
transformations occur in the people who have studied music in school. The
rest of us sit around and ask ourselves (or other attendees), "Do they really teach it that way in schools?
Why would they do that?" etc., etc. Duncan's invariable answer: they teach
it that way because that's always the way it's been taught, in other words:
TRADITION. That's it. That's the whole reason why "Middle C" is used
as a stable reference point in most music theory classes, even though it is not
in the middle of the keyboard, or the middle of the written notation, or the
middle of anything else. You do find out, by the way, at the seminar,
exactly when this started and why.
And remember all those Greek names for the scales you memorized? Well,
those scales didn't originate from ancient Greece, but again, you'll have to
come to the seminar to find out why they were labeled with Greek names.
The tears really start rolling off (or some other major emotional reaction)
when Duncan gets to the "circle of fifths". Don't worry if you have no
idea what this is; for now I'll just tell you that this diagram does not refer to fifths of
anything anymore, and its
exact use is explained by Duncan on Sunday afternoon in about three minutes.
The totality of it is covered in three minutes, and apparently due to the
extreme importance given to it by music instructors in music school (and also in music
theory books), and the enormous amount of time spent by music school students in
learning this thing, they get a real kick out of undoing that complexity.
Eric Rodgers, student
Previous music experience: 6 yrs of school orchestra (viola)
"I enjoyed the seminar a lot more than I thought I would. It has
made me want to take up new instruments and, more directly, learn to play the
guitar. From the seminar I've learned new practicing methods and things
that simplify my previous years of music. I've also learned about music
history, music theory, and various methods that can be applied to not only
music, but also many different arts and life itself. Thank you."
How Eric found out about the Understanding of Music Seminar is a story in
itself. Eric's private viola teacher, Kate Krueger, is a very special
story. Kate is a trained violinist and has over 15 years playing
experience and over 7 years teaching experience.
Kate began studying the violin at the age of 9 and quickly progressed through
her musical studies. She began studying privately at age 11 and enrolled
at the Michigan State University School of Music. Kate performed with the
Lansing Junior Symphony, The University of Michigan Youth Symphony, and toured
the Midwest and Western Europe with Blue Lake's International Youth Symphony
Orchestra. Kate has also performed with the Michigan State University
Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras.
Throughout her education, Kate encountered numerous false data on the subject of
music. In December of 2005, she attended The Understanding of Music
Seminar here at Angell Street House. During the course of the seminar, she
confronted the false data and put herself at cause over the subject of music.
Kate
Krueger, student & teacher
Previous music experience: violin - 15 years
Here is Kate's success from her first Understanding of Music Seminar, December
2005:
“I wish I had
taken Duncan’s seminar when I first graduated from high school and was
beginning to start my music education program. Within my first year at
the university I found myself discouraged and overwhelmed. I was told
repeatedly by music professors, conductors, and fellow students that I would
only be successful if I completely immersed myself in music; ignoring the
outside world and banging away in a practice room for five hours a day.
Had I been blessed earlier on with Duncan’s research, insights, and humor,
perhaps I would’ve completed my music degree.”
Kate came to Angell Street
House again in July, 2007:
"Awesome. This is my second time attending the Understanding of Music
Seminar and I got so much out of it. I feel like a part of my life has
fallen into place after years of confusion. I realized I gave up a career
in music because I just didn't understand. Thank you Duncan from
the bottom of my heart. You are a master teacher and your approach to
education lends itself to all of life, not just music. Thank you."
Kate has moved to Clearwater, FL and is now a licensed teacher of
The Understanding of Music Seminar. As a teacher licensed by Duncan Lorien,
Kate uses Duncan's proven methodologies to put other students at cause over
music.

Here are a couple more successes from music school students who
attended the Understanding of Music Seminar here at Angell Street House:
Della Melton, jazz vocalist, voice-over talent
Previous music experience: college
"This was my 3rd seminar and I finally understand fractions (and how they
apply to rhythm). I had such a hang-up on rhythm, but now I feel really
good about it. See ya next time. Thanks a lot."
Chris Tyler, actuary
Previous music experience: first chair jazz coronet in high school
"My perspective on music has
completely changed for the better! In my 15 years as a musician I
have yet to have the seminar information explained to me in such an easily
understood fashion. Any holes in my understanding have been filled and I
now have the tools to be an awesome musician. The history lessons alone
are worth the price of admission!"

Duncan will be in New York only ONCE in 2008!
Let me tell you right now, for under $500 and in only three days, you are
going to get what the two girls above (Kate, Della) didn't get in YEARS of college.
Whether you know NOTHING about music, or
you are an experienced musician already, you owe it to yourself to meet Duncan
and learn from him. He offers two 100% money-back guarantees on his
weekend Seminar, so you cannot go wrong by enrolling.
But first, let's cover exactly what you are going to learn at the seminar:
-
thousands of years
of music history,
-
everything you need
to know about music theory,
-
how to read sheet
music for piano,
-
how to read sheet
music for guitar,
-
how to teach
yourself to play any western musical instrument!
Every attendee reads and plays music,
hands together on the keyboard, by the end of the Seminar.
Lifelong musicians fill in gaps in
their understanding,
and reach new creative heights!
Quick links: Back to top,
Music Beginners,
Self-Taught Musicians, Music School
Students.
Why do the Seminar?
The Seminar explains where the
following incorrect ideas
about music come from:
-
Music is complex and difficult to learn.
-
Music is a “serious” subject.
-
Music takes years to learn.
-
Music education is expensive.
-
Music requires at least some natural
ability and talent.
-
Music is not for everyone.
What does the Seminar cover?
-
Learning all the note names on the
keyboard and guitar from memory and how to work out the note names on other
types of Western musical instruments.
-
How to play all the scales and
modes (a special type of scale) on both keyboard and guitar. Dozens of scales
are easily memorized during the seminar.
-
How to play every chord on both
keyboard and guitar. Dozens of chords are easily memorized during the seminar.
-
How simply the physics of sound and the
history of music can be explained.
-
New breakthrough easy exercises to teach
you to coordinate hands and fingers.
-
How to read any piece of music for
keyboard and guitar in minutes not hours (even professional musicians are
amazed by this revolutionary new system).
-
How to do a simple 10 minute daily
practice schedule that really works.
-
To read and play music by Bach, hands
together on the keyboard by the end of the Seminar.
-
No claim is made that graduates play like
Elton John or Eric Clapton in only one weekend but every beginner understands,
reads and plays music by the end of the weekend and professional musicians say
they reach new creative heights.
Two Money-Back Guarantees
Money-Back Guarantee #1: Any Seminar attendee, at the end
of the Friday night, can ask for and receive a 100% full refund if they
are not completely certain that the weekend will be worth their time and money.
Money-Back Guarantee: #2:
There is a 100% money-back guarantee for any Seminar attendee who does
not achieve exactly what the Seminar promises to deliver! (The nine points
above in What does the Seminar cover?) This guarantee has never
been asked for by any attendee, in over fifteen years.
Quick links: Back to top,
Music Beginners,
Self-Taught Musicians, Music School
Students.
How can all this happen in
one weekend?
By using an advanced system of
easy steps developed by Duncan Lorien that ensures everyone in the
Seminar fully understands and is able to apply each step before the next
step is started. All the Seminar information is included in an easy-to-read
manual with simple diagrams. The attendee interacts with the manual throughout
the Seminar and continues at home with the daily practice schedule. The
Seminar manual is included in the cost of the Seminar.
What is the graduation rate?
100%.
This graduation rate explains the huge expansion of this “grass-roots” movement
around the world as graduates tell family, friends and colleagues about their
success from doing the Seminar.
What instruments are
required?
Duncan Lorien recommends
the keyboard as the fastest instrument to learn music on and if you have your
own portable keyboard please bring it with you as this helps to ensure everyone
has access to a keyboard. You are welcome to bring an acoustic guitar as the
Seminar is immediately applied to guitar as well. Although the information is
fully applicable to other instruments such as brass, woodwind, percussion or
voice, only keyboards or acoustic guitars should be brought to the
Seminar.
Who should come to this
Seminar?
Absolute beginners in music,
professionals in all styles of music, college graduates with music
degrees, music teachers and even music college instructors have all attended and
testified to the incredible success they have experienced with the Seminar. The
youngest graduate is only 6 years old and the oldest is 91. The youngest
recommended age is 13 years old (depending on study ability). Younger children
will be considered on written application.
What is the Seminar schedule?
Friday, June 13th,
2008 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm
(please arrive by 6:00
pm to verify registration and get oriented to the facilities)
Saturday, June 14th, 2008 9:30 am - 7:00 pm (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
lunch break)
Sunday, June 15th, 2008 9:30 am - 7:00 pm (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
lunch break)
Quick links: Back to top,
Music Beginners,
Self-Taught Musicians, Music School
Students.
Is the Seminar expensive?
Hundreds of expensive music
lessons and many years of study are normally spent trying to understand,
read and play music. So, this weekend Seminar that delivers exactly what it
promises to deliver actually saves both money and time! Graduates have
said they would have paid ten times the
fee for this Seminar and that “it gave them
freedom to communicate using the language of music”. What price would you
place on gaining that freedom? There is a 100% money back guarantee
which has yet to be taken up by a graduate who felt the Seminar did not deliver
exactly what it promises to deliver!
Are there any Seminar rules?
-
No drugs or alcohol
may be consumed during the weekend on which the Seminar is being held
(attendees receiving prescription drugs under medical supervision are
requested to advise the Seminar Organizer what drugs are being prescribed).
-
Any attendee
with a reading or hearing problem or who is physically challenged is requested
to advise the Seminar Organizer
so the best efforts can be made to accommodate that attendee.
-
No smoking will be allowed
during the Seminar but sufficient meal and rest breaks should ensure this is
not a problem.
-
Any attendee
who is unable to adhere to the full schedule and maintain punctuality
creates a disruption to the rest of the attendees and will be refunded and
asked to leave the Seminar.
-
Tape recording is not permitted
as it creates a distraction. Taking notes is welcomed but not essential as all
information is in the Seminar manual.
-
Each attendee must make the Seminar
Presenter immediately aware of any confusion or difficulty so that it
can be fully handled at that time.
What is the Seminar
attendance fee?
$495.
There are no discounted rates. The fee includes the Seminar manual, and
the opportunity to do the Seminar again for only 20% of the full cost,
anywhere in the world! Repeating the seminar is strongly encouraged as
those people who have repeated can attest it ensures that the concepts and
actions are totally mastered to the satisfaction of each individual.
Four Options to Enroll
Because Duncan travels around
the world delivering his Seminar, including Europe, Australia and South Africa,
his plans are made well in advance. A deposit of $250 is
required to secure the place of a student in the Seminar.
For some people, coming up with
$250 all at once can be a little tricky, and I even had one time when a
deposit was forfeited due to a late cancellation. For this reason I am
offering four options to enroll. One of these methods is sure to
fit your situation. Just click on the Enroll Now button below.
Early Registration Bonuses
For 15 years Duncan has included 30 daily music lessons in
the Seminar manual. These are lessons you do at home, with Duncan walking
you through the finger exercises, chord and scale exercises, reading and playing
music exercises, step by step for 30 days. Because of the world-wide
demand, Duncan went ahead and developed an additional 70 daily lessons, and made
these available to graduates of the Seminar for an additional $140. That's
only $2 for each daily lesson! That's nothing compared to the cost
of personal music lessons! By worldwide statistics, the graduates of this
Seminar that complete all 100 lessons do in fact accomplish their goals in
music.
BONUS #1: Enroll for this Seminar
today and
you will receive ALL 100 lessons for either piano or guitar, for
NO EXTRA CHARGE! ($140 Value)
BONUS #2: By enrolling today, you will
