The History of Physical
Culture
The history of western medicine and Physical
Culture extends back to ancient Greece, where a
person went to two places to receive an
education: the Museum and the Gymnasium.
At the Museum, a person studied Music,
which was nine subjects
– everything
from song and dance, to meditation and astronomy
– inspired by
the nine Muses - goddesses of inspiration.
You can learn more about Music by coming to the
Understanding of Music Seminar.
Gymnasium, on the other hand, comes from
the ancient Greek word gymnos, which means
naked. Fact is, athletes trained in
the nude back then, and in those days, only
unmarried women were allowed to view the
Olympics – you
can imagine why! Fortunately, things have
changed since then, and we can pick and choose
which traditions we wish to carry forward.
Massage therapy and
medicine evolved from the Gymnasium.
Hippocrates, the
Father of Modern Medicine, author of the
Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians today -
"never do harm to anyone . . . ", was in fact
the caretaker of youth training for athletic
competition at a Gymnasium in ancient Greece.
The word "drug" comes from a word that meant
"dry," as in dried herbs. Today,
drugs are mostly poisons, and modern medicine is
so far removed from what Hippocrates taught, he is
probably rolling over in his grave!
Dr.
John Harvey Kellogg,
Pioneer of Health and Nutrition
Battle Creek, Michigan, became
famous in the late 1800's as a cultural center
where people came to learn a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Kellogg's natural health regimen,
delivered at the world-famous Battle Creek
Sanitarium (which literally means "Health Resort",
from the Latin word for health, sanitas),
much more closely resembled the teachings of
Hippocrates. In the photo here (courtesy of
Willard Library) you see hundreds of people, young
and old alike, learning breathing exercises at the
Battle Creek Sanitarium.

Here you see Dr. J. H. Kellogg lecturing in the
parlor at the Sanitarium (photo courtesy of
Willard Library).
The original meaning of "doctor" was
"teacher".
Patients of Dr. J. H. Kellogg were taught
deep-breathing exercises and basic calisthenics as
part of a healthy daily regimen. This is
old-school knowledge!

Patients of Dr. J. H. Kellogg also learned basic
calisthenics as part of a healthy daily regimen.
In this photo (courtesy of Willard Library) you
see young and old alike learning some basic
movements.
Diet and Nutrition are
Key to a Lifetime of Fitness and Health
Modern-day researcher Ian "Doc" Shillington is
a Doctor of Naturopathy (by definition, a subject
which deals with the Cause of Disease), and
has been carrying on the tradition of Hippocrates
and Dr. J. H. Kellogg, teaching people the
Cause of Disease, and how to reverse the
dwindling spiral of health. His
Lifetime Health Lecture Series gives vital
information YOU NEED to get the most out of ANY
fitness program.
